Books
about Prenatal Yoga
Balaskas, Janet. Preparing for
Birth with Yoga. Element Books, 1994.
Thoughtful, in-depth book based on her extensive teaching, with useful
information about physical changes during pregnancy and their relationship
to posture, movement, and breath. Diagrams and photos both used. Includes
list of common physical problems and solutions.
Balaskas, Janet. Easy Exercises
for Pregnancy. Antique Collectors Club, 1999.
A much simpler, exercise-focused version of the above book. Wonderful
full-color photos of pregnant women doing one simple exercise per page,
with brief instructions. Includes a helpful section on partner exercises.
Freedman, Francoise Barbira and Doriel
Hall, Yoga for Pregnancy. Cassell, 2003.
This book includes lots of photos and takes you systematically through
your entire pregnancy. One nice touch—the memorably evocative
names for all the poses. Good (short) appendixes on breathing and troubleshooting.
Noble, Elizabeth. Essential Exercises
for the Childbearing Year. New Life Images. 2003.
Written by a medical doctor. Covers physical changes; how to prepare,
use and restore key muscles involved in pregnancy, labor, delivery,
and postpartum; includes a preventive program for optimal recovery of
abdominal and pelvic floor muscles; discusses how to avoid back pain,
maintain bladder control, keep fit and flexible. Offers very good insights
and advice, very down to earth. Her focus is on mechanics and physiology.
Has interesting partnering movements you can practice. This is a very
popular book, a classic in the field.
Teasdill, Wendy, Step-by-Step Yoga
for Pregnancy: Essential Exercises for the Childbearing Year. Contemporary
Books. 2000.
An Iyengar teacher presents several complete routines for each trimester
of pregnancy and offers useful information about a variety of relevant
topics. Illustrated with full-color drawings, the book includes simple,
clear instructions for every asana. Ends with a discussion of labor
and a short section on postpartum yoga.
Olkin, Sylvia Klein. Positive Pregnancy
Fitness. Avery. 1987.
A holistic approach to a healthy pregnancy. Author has a nationwide
network of classes and teachers that she developed. “Rock the
baby” breath is one of her hallmarks. She gives complete and detailed
instructions for all poses. Has mostly exercises, but also emphasizes
the emotional component of pregnancy. Illustrated with drawings, not
photos. A generally useful, practical book.

An Iyengar teacher presents several complete routines for each trimester

Widdowson, Rosalind, Yoga for Pregnancy.
Creative Publishing, 2001.
This book includes postures and breathing techniques for each stage
of pregnancy, providing a total of twelve 15-, 20-, and 30-minute routines.
Each two-page spread shows how to start, go into, and come out of a
particular pose, and also explains how it works energetically as well
as offering ideas for your mental focus (“imaginative thought”). The
book also has advice on relieving minor discomforts of pregnancy.
